Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is fully curable especially if it is diagnosed in the early stage. Typically, the treatment involves surgical removal of the prostate which may be followed by radiotherapy or hormone therapy, or both.

Radical Prostatectomy

This surgery completely removes the prostate gland, nearby lymph nodes, as well as seminal vesicles, and part of the urethra. It removes all cancer cells but is recommended only if the cancer has not spread outside the prostate.

Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy

It is a minimal invasive procedure done through small cuts near the tumor site. This is done under general anesthesia or an epidural. The advantage of this procedure is a short hospital stay and faster recovery.

Green Light Laser PVP

It is the preferred treatment for prostate tumors, especially BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia). It uses a laser to perform photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP). Unlike traditional prostate surgery, it does not cut or scrape tissues.

High-intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

HIFU is a technique that uses heat to destroy the area of the prostate gland affected by cancer. It uses a probe that gives out a beam of high-intensity focused ultrasound.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is typically given to the affected area to prevent recurrence and protect the surrounding normal tissues. It can be given externally through a beam or internally via capsules or implants.

Hormone Therapy

Prostate cancer is dependent on testosterone (male hormone) for its growth. Hormone therapy reduces the level of testosterone in the body which shrinks the cancer or slows down its growth for some time.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is mostly used to treat recurring or metastatic prostate cancer. It uses specific drugs targeted to kill cancer cells.
