Treatment of Hand and Arm Transplant

Pre Transplant

The patient undergoes several evaluations to assess their transplant readiness. One may have to work with a physical therapist to increase the strength and flexibility of their hands/arms before the transplant.

Transplant

The surgeon first attaches the patient’s bones to the bones of the donor hands/arms using small metal plates. Then, the blood vessels, nerves, and tendons are attached using special sutures (stitches). Once all the parts of the donor hands/arms have been attached, the skin is closed.

Post Transplant

After the surgery, the patient is taken to the intensive care unit for observation and recovery. A special hand/arm therapist will work with the patient on physical therapy to get their new organ functioning. The patient may have to wear a splint in between exercises to keep the hands/arms stable.
