Diabetic Eye Disease
Diabetic eye disease is a group of eye problems that can affect people with diabetes.
Types of Diabetic Eye Disease
Diabetic Retinopathy
It is a diabetes complication in which blood vessels can weaken, bulge, or leak into the retina resulting in loss of vision.
Diabetic Macular Edema
Diabetes can lead to swelling in the macula (a part of the retina) which can lead to partial vision loss or blindness.
Glaucoma
This is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve which connects the eye to the brain. Diabetes doubles the chances of Glaucoma.
Cataract
It is the clouding of the eye lens and is more likely to develop in diabetic patients.
Signs & Symptoms of Diabetic Eye Disease
- Blurry or wavy vision
- Frequently changing vision—sometimes from day to day
- Dark areas or vision loss
- Poor color vision
- Spots or dark strings (also called floaters)
- Flashes of light
Treatment of Diabetic Eye Disease
Medicine
Anti-VEGF medicine blocks the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye. It can also stop fluid leaks, which can help treat diabetic macular edema. These medicines are injected into the eye by the doctor.
Laser Treatment
Also called photocoagulation, this procedure involves creating tiny burns inside the eye with a beam of light. It helps treat leaky blood vessels and extra fluid, called edema.
Vitrectomy
It is a surgery to remove the clear gel that fills the center of the eye, called the vitreous gel. This helps treat problems with severe bleeding or scar tissue caused by proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Cataract Lens Surgery
The surgeon removes the cloudy lens in the eye and replaces it with an artificial lens. This promotes better vision.
