Cataract
Cataract is the clouding of the eye lens which leads to loss of vision.
Types of Cataract
Age-related Cataracts
It develops as a result of aging.
Congenital Cataracts
Kids are sometimes born with cataracts due to an infection, injury, or poor development before birth, or they may develop it during childhood.
Secondary Cataracts
These grow as a result of other medical conditions, like diabetes, or exposure to toxic substances, certain drugs (such as corticosteroids or diuretics), ultraviolet light, or radiation.
Traumatic Cataracts
These develop as a result of an injury to the eye.
Signs & Symptoms of Cataract
- Cloudy or blurry vision
- Colors seem faded
- Poor night vision
- Double vision in one eye
- Frequent prescription changes in eyeglasses or contact lenses
- Glare, headlights, lamps, or sunlight may appear too bright. A halo may appear around lights.
Treatment of Cataract
Phacoemulsification
It is a surgical procedure wherein two small incisions are made into the cornea to peel off the front layer of the lens. An ultrasonic device is inserted into the eye to break the cataract. Once the cataract is removed, an intraocular lens implant is repositioned in its place.
Multifocal Lenses
Multifocal IOLs are a type of prosthetic lens that come with astigmatism correction. The patient’s natural lenses are replaced with these to allow correction at all distances and make vision as natural as possible.
Trifocal Lenses
Trifocal lenses for cataract surgery have different zones to correct various types of vision problems. These include close-up, intermediate, and distance vision.
Extended Range Lenses
These lenses address both presbyopia and astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery by providing an extended range of vision, excellent distance, and intermediate vision with improved near vision.
