Dr. A. K. Banerji is an expert in the field of Neurosurgery in India. He is known for establishing micro neurosurgery in India, standardizing neurosurgical training and evaluation, and contributing to the development of various neurosurgical sub-specialties. He systematically developed aneurysm surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, transsphenoidal surgery, and surgery for pineal region tumorous among other pioneering interventions.
Prof. Banerji joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1965 and was instrumental in setting up the Neurosurgery Department from scratch. He has been bestowed as an Emeritus Professor at AIIMS, Delhi for his contributions and dedication to the field of Neurosurgery.
After his successful stint at AIIMS, Dr. A. K. Banerji launched VIMHANS (Vidyasagar Institute of Medical Sciences), New Delhi, which was one of the country’s first mental health and neurosciences centers in the private sector. He has not only given several orations but has the rare distinction of having two orations named after him.
